John F. Dawson

U.S. Veteran

Died suddenly Thursday, September 13, 2012 at his residence. He was born December 26, 1922, in Ypsilanti, MI the son of Wesley M and Margaret (West) Dawson. John graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1941, and completed two years of college at Eastern Michigan University before getting drafted. He was honorably discharged from the U.S Army Air Corp where he served in India and Alaska during World War II. On May 1, 1946, he married Mary Elizabeth Holdridge at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ypsilanti and she preceded him in death on September 20, 1995. John owned and operated the Martin L. Dawson Hardware and Lumber Store in Ypsilanti for many years and retired from the J.L .Hudson Co. where he was employed as a salesman. He was an active and devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he once served as an Eucharist Minister. John was a member of the Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus #3230, Jaycees, Ypsilanti Players, Barbershop Quarter and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Survivors include his two children: Mary Margaret (Harold “Pete”) Sherman and Carol (Richard) Post; five grandchildren: Michael Sherman, Andrew (Cara) Sherman, Angela Mary Post, Scott Dawson and Harrison Dawson; two great grandchildren: Benjamin and Isabella Sherman; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two children: John F. Dawson Jr. and Teresa Dawson and three brothers, Martin Dawson, Howard Dawson and George Dawson. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 17, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Roggenbuck as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Ypsilanti, MI. Contributions in his memory may be made to Catholic Social Services, 4925 Packard Rd., Ann Arbor, MI or Elderwise at Cleary University. Envelopes will be available at the Church on Monday where the family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until time of Mass.
